Fake Plastic Trees

Spring has sprung...heck, the month of May will be over soon which means that Memorial Day is almost here!  The pools will be opening soon.  Isn't it time to be planning for summer already?

The trees in Connecticut are finally starting to turn green again.  Planters are begging for fresh, beautiful flowers.  And, while most people would venture to their local nurseries for flowers and potted plants, I went to my neighborhood Michaels craft store for fake plastic trees.  Yes.

Fake.  Plastic.  Trees.

I may be talented at many things, but I've never ever pretended to act like I have a green thumb.  I have spent countless dinero filling and refilling my planters--WITHIN THE SAME SEASON.

So this year, I went faux.  That's right.  I bought fake.  Is there even such a phenomenon?  I think this is sort of like one of those things where if you do it you're not really supposed to TELL people that you do it.  Like if you get botox, you don't actually SHARE that you get botox.

Well, I have no shame.  (Neighbors just squint your eyes when you drive by the house so they look more authentic).

Introducing my overstuffed fern planters blowing in the wind with fake plastic trees.

That's one project I won't be repeating again this season and it feels damn good.

Long Island Newsday did a feature on this a few summers ago. People were "supplementing" their planters (and even their beds) with faux flowers -- geraniums, especially, so they'd never have a lack of blooms. I think no one will even be able to tell from the street. When your friends get to the front door, though, you may have some 'splaining to do, Lucy . . . .

I've been thinking the same thing, Heather! I have cyclamen that works great from November through now. But whatever I plant for summer always dies and has to be replaced at least once. It's so annoying. I have Creeping Jenny that does very well spilling out of the pots and adding bright green. I've wondered about fake boxwood topiaries. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new blog design!
